EJC 2006: Finland gave away the victory to Russia

Category: - published 2006-07-24 by EFAF

Finland did everything right in three quarters against Russia. But then they invited Russia into the game och a 13-0 lead was turned to a russian victory with 14-13

First half was a solid finnish gameplan and they controled the game, but a fumble on russian 1st yd line made the quarter scoreless. Most of the battles was between the finnish RB Janne Eskola and the russian LB Dmitry Khotsinskiy, both players voted game MVP.

In the second quarter Russia changed QB to Anton Shaykhiev and their offence started to produce but still fFinland controlled the game. And Finland took the lead with two minutes left of the half when Ville Vene ran around the russian right defence and scored the first TD for Finland in the tournament.

Russia tried to come back just before half time but an interception from Atte Penttinen closed hte half and went into halftime leading 7-0.

Second half Finland continued to play well and a fumble by Russia on their own 24 yd line gave Finland an good opportunity and Eskola found his way into the end zone when Khotsinsky missed one of his first tackle.

Russia had trouble on their offence and when Evgeny Buzaev was ejected from the game nothing lseemed to go russias way.

But football is unpredictable and when a finnish longsnap early in the forth quarter sailed over the finnish punter Ville Wacklin Russia got their hope up agian since Ilya Presnyakov caught the ball in the endzone and Russia reduced the finnish lead to 7-13.

Russias defence stepped up and the successful finnish running game was stopped. New russian chances came when the finnish CB Pavvo Teittinen slipped and russian WR Ramil Khisyametdinav was wide open and QB Shaykhiev delivered a 43 yd TD pass. XP is good and Russia lead the game for the first time with 14-13.

Finland desperate try to come back in the end, got a TD called back for holding and they try a 32 yd field goal that is just wide left by Ville Wackins spark. Russian victory and still have a chance to make it to the final but really need to improve threir game.
