ABOUT IFAF

American Football is a fascinating sport that has drawn people in over 50 countries on all 6 continents into its spell. Not only in its home, the United States has the sport found its fans, but also in countries like Australia, South Korea and Finland.

The first national American Football federations outside of the United States were founded in 1896 at Canada, 1936 at Japan following Europe in 1976. Since then the sport has experienced a significant expansion, especially in Europe, which finally reached its peak through the founding of the European Federation of American Football (1996) followed by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).

Currently, 64 associations in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania are organized within IFAF.

The first IFAF Senior World Championship took place in 1999 in Italy and continental competitions are now being played for the 20th year in a row. The second IFAF Senior World Championship was in 2003 in Frankfurt Rhine-Main-Area (Germany) before Tokyo, Japan hosted the 2007 tournament and Austria the 2011.

IFAF also staged the first ever IFAF Junior World Championship in Canton, Ohio in 2009 and took part in the inaugural USA vs. The World games in 2010. The first ever IFAF Women’s World Championship was held in Sweden in 2010.

The goals of IFAF include growing its membership, increasing participation in competitions and receiving recognition by the International Olympic Committee.
